Independent Living and Retirement Communities

Designed to provide low-cost housing for the disabled and elderly, Independent Living Facilities provide housing only, although some may offer transportation, recreation, and support services. Residents in subsidized facilities are normally expected to pay one-third of their monthly income. Some of these facilities may no longer offer subsidized housing or low-income housing due to changes in their arrangements with the federal government, while other facilities offer lower than market rate rent to qualifying individuals. By law, federal facilities must accept small pets; however, some restrictions may apply.

Designed to provide a complete lifestyle for those of retirement age, Retirement Communities offer private living facilities with support services ranging from meals to health care monitoring, transportation to and from appointments, linen service and weekly housecleaning, and educational and entertainment services. Communities may offer independent apartments, assisted living residences, and/or nursing home care. Costs vary significantly.
